ICANN APPROVES THE EXPANSION OF TLD'S

At its 41st International Meeting between the 19th and 24th of June in Singapore, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the international body responsible for the global coordination system of exclusive internet identifications, approved the expansion of top-level domains ("TLD") and mentioned the possibility of using non-Latin characters such as Mandarin, Cirillic, or any other scrip in site names.

The expansion of internet domain suffixes has been discussed for over six years through negotiations between groups of companies, governments and the virtual community. This long wait reflects a fear in relation to the potential costs generated for such a transformation as this is the biggest change in the domain name organization since the 90's. For example, a company that has its trademark registered in a domain of the internet may have to register the name with an indefinite number of suffixes just to protect it.

From January of 2012, on, registrars will be able to acquire new suffixes from ICANN and resell them to interested parties. They will be charge a tax of 165 thousand dollars for a suffix, and the candidates will have to fill out a request themselves. A 360-page Guidebook specifies the rules, requirements, and the process to qualify for suffix auction.

O ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), orgão internacional responsável pela coordenação do sistema global de identificações exclusivas de internet aprovou na sua 41a reunião, que ocorreu entre 19 e 24 de Junho, em Cingapura, a expansão dos domínios de nível superior (TLD´s) e a possibilidade de utilizar caracteres não latinos como mandarim, cirilico ou qualquer outro script em nomes de site.

As alterações relacionadas com a expansão do sufixos de domínio de internet foram debatidas por mais de seis anos, através de negociações entre grupos de empresas, governos e a Comunidade virtual. Este longo período até sua aprovação, reflete o medo em relação aos custos gerados por essa transformação, que é a maior desde a década de 90. A empresa que tem sua marca registrada no domínio da internet, por exemplo, teria que registrá-la em sufixos indefinidos para ser capaz de protegê-la.

A partir de Janeiro de 2012, os agentes de registo poderão adquirir novos sufixos junto ao ICANN e revendê-los para as partes interessadas. Será cobrada uma taxa de 165,000 dólares por sufixo e os candidatos terão de preencher os requisites presentes no Guia de 360 páginas, que especifica as regras, requisitos e processo para qualificar-se para o leilão de sufixos.
